Investment Opportunity September 25, 2003 (Axcess News) Washington DC - A federal advisory panel this week discussed the status of health organizations and their efforts to prepare for a biological terrorist attack or disease outbreak.The panel, formed in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks meets periodically to consider the implications of anthrax scares, SARS, smallpox and other possible bioterrorism and public health emergencies.The Council on Public Health Preparedness, made up of experts from the medical community and various universities and public health services, met near Washington Monday and Tuesday. Alternative Investment Engstrom said the CDC is focusing on seven areas to improve disaster preparedness, including increasing lab capacity for biological and chemical specimens, communications, education and readiness assessments.She said HRSA is putting its emphasis on making sure there is enough room at hospitals to accommodate a surge of patients during a health crisis as well as making sure there are emergency medical services in place.She said that there must be a "unifying, jurisdiction-wide strategy where state and local health departments will be able to mount a collective and seamless response" to a public health crisis.The council questioned whether hospitals would be equipped to handle more than one major health event. But a panel of agency representatives, including Engstrom, maintained that the first step should be the ability to handle a major event and not compromise the care given to other patients.
