Burma: US Oil Giant Pulls Out of Country
Bank Of America Investment YANGON -- Oil services provider Baker Hughes has become the latest United States firm to pull out of Burma, human rights campaigners and the firm's local partner said Wednesday.
Before a coup dtat in 1962, that left the country a socialist totalitarian state controlled by its army, Burma was a thriving peridot producer, principally in its North Central Mogok district. Now, Burma is in economic shambles, completely poor and depressed. The only Burmese peridot available now is decent, but far from great, yet the price is a hundred times that of Burma best before the country was shut off from the world. Politics are the reason Burma can no longer be counted on for peridot. Burma still produces some gems, but mining is clandestine and most goods are passed onto the outside world through a rather elaborate network of smugglers. Thailand is actually a cheap conduit for Burmese contraband.
Investment Opportunity Baker Hughes is transferring its interest in an exploration project in the Mann oil fields in northern Burma (also known as Myanmar) to its associate in Yangon, Myanmar Petroleum Resources Limited (MPRL).
dollar project that aims to extract oil and gas from beneath the coast of far eastern Russia's Sakhalin Island. The oil giant Royal Dutch Shell is leading the investment on the island, - the same amount of remaining reserves in the North Sea. The company is seeking up to five billion dollars in financing for the project.
Banc Of America Investment Campaigners opposed to Burma's junta immediately hailed the decision as proof that a campaign to isolate military leaders accused of flagrant human rights abuses was working.
Shorea is possibly the best wood choice for outdoor furniture. While related to Burma teak, this hardwood grows naturally and plentifully in the Pacific Rim countries, making it considerably less expensive than teak. Because shorea contains an abundance of natural oils, is dense, heavy and hard, it is highly resistant to rot, bug infestation, wear and marring.
Banking Investment "We are pleased with Baker Hughes' action," said Pam Wellner of the No Petro-dollars for SLORC campaign. The SLORC (State Law and Order Restoration Council) was the former name of the junta, which now refers to itself as the State Peace and Development Council.
Political events are what make Oil an attractive investment for novice and intermediate level investors as a deep knowledge of economic indicators is not crucial.
Investment Solution Strategic The managing director of the firm's local partner however denied that the move was motivated by political considerations.
There are not too many countries in the world with the allure of Burma (Myanmar). Through years of isolation, it has managed to retain many of its cultural traditions and preserved much of its historical heritage. As such, a visit to Burma is in many ways similar to a journey ...
Investment Banking Services "There is nothing political, it is about (Baker Hughes') restructuring ... the political situation does not affect MPRL at all," said Moe Myint in an interview with AFP.
Bank Investment "The project will be there, with the blessing of the investors, the investment commission, the cabinet, the project will continue."
Alternative Investment "We are continuing (the project) with the same project team and we are increasing the production ... We are not scaling back."
Online Investment Services The statement from No Petro-dollars for SLORC speculated that the firm may have been unwilling to continue fighting the campaign against investment in Myanmar or could have been put off by rising corruption.
Accompany Essential Investment It also said that a campaign by shareholders questioning the company's involvement in Myanmar may have been behind the decision.
Investment Company "Doing business in Burma under current circumstances greatly benefits the military junta, and Baker Hughes joins the long list of companies (including Texaco, Arco and PepsiCo) who have done the right thing," said Wellner.
Investment Management Solution Firms with links to alleged totalitarian regimes are also currently eyeing a US Supreme Court case on the Massachusetts Law which is aimed at economically penalising the junta.
Investment Management Services The statute, undertaken by several US states and cities, adds a 10 percent penalty on companies who do business in Myanmar when they bid on government procurement contracts -- effectively barring them from winning the contracts.
