The Need for Speed
The Need for Speed
Author: DAN BLANTON
Your ability to present a fly quickly, particularly when targeting flats species or schools of rapidly moving surface feeders, often proves critical to success. If you can't get your fly to these fish quickly - certainly within a brief window compared with most freshwater fly fishing - you'll frequently find yourself out of the action. The need for speed doesn't relate to how fast you need to retrieve your fly. Rather, it applies to how fast you can deliver it.
Bank Of America Investment My first fly-rod experience on the flats ended up a total disaster. My problem stemmed from not realizing the importance of presentation speed, let alone the best ways to accomplish it. As my guide searched for permit, wind gusts of 15 to 20 knots gave us conditions just right for experienced permit veterans.

Investment Opportunity "Here they come, 11 o'clock, 150 feet, moving fast along the edge of the bank!" the guide exclaimed.

Banc Of America Investment I stood on the casting deck, line stripped out, fly and doubled 10-foot leader in my left hand, with about 10 feet of fly line extended beyond the rod tip, flapping like a flag. The wind gusted hard from my right rear quarter.

Banking Investment The fish were moving much faster than I'd anticipated, and when the guide yelled, "Cast!" the silver sides flashed within 40 feet. Figuring I'd better finesse the cast for a soft landing, I dropped fly and leader into the water and gently started to make a roll cast, setting up for my back cast.

Investment Banking Services I know now that you never want to finesse a cast when the wind is blowing! As I drew the rod back, a strong gust snatched the slow-moving fly line and blew it to my left side, wrapping the rod and completely killing the cast. The fly fouled itself in the bow ring - and my presentation speed equaled zero, completely stifling any opportunity.
Bank Investment And there's nothing more humiliating than making one of those wuss casting attempts, ending up with the line wrapping around the rod tip or the fly striking either you or, worse, the guide. When the wind's gusting, it's always far better to overpower rather than underpower the cast.
Alternative Investment Those permit blew on by us like they had afterburners! I could feel two holes being burned in my back; although the guide didn't say a word, I knew he wasn't happy. I never made that mistake again.
Online Investment Services Those used to fly fishing in fresh water find target species often stationary or feeding with minimal movement, providing ample time to make a good presentation or correct a bad one. On the other hand, saltwater species are usually on the move, often changing course as they go, so marine fly anglers must be constantly prepared to alter their plans and redirect or correct an errant cast. Presentation speed and the ability to react quickly to sudden changes are paramount. You must also be set up properly to make the quick toss.
Accompany Essential Investment
Investment Company Fly and Line: At the Ready!
Investment Management Solution Something as simple as improperly holding your fly at the ready can slow you down or kill the presentation completely. Most experienced flats fly rodders I know hold the fly by the hook bend, with the hook point and bite leader pointed straight away from the hand. Holding the fly in a manner that causes the bite leader to run through your palm can lead to problems, like sticking yourself when trying to release the fly. Never hold the fly in such a manner - it's difficult to make speedy presentations if you've impaled yourself.
Investment Management Services Your leader and the proper amount of fly line should extend beyond the rod tip and trail in the water alongside the skiff. This is extremely important for good speed. The preferred approach calls for holding the fly as described above, then allowing enough fly line to extend out the rod tip to form a long loop of line trailing in the water, providing more line weight to better load the rod.
Guide Investment Stock Make sure the loop's not so long that it extends beyond the transom, risking entanglement with a trim tab or the guide's push pole. The amount of line forming the loop dragging outside the boat depends on the length of the boat: You can allow the loop to trail to the transom (e.g., from the casting deck of an 18-footer, you could have up to 30 feet of line/leader beyond the rod tip). If floating grass becomes a problem, you may have to go with a shorter loop.
Investment Manual Solution I've found it best not to hold your leader in loops or coils, which usually find a way to tangle in the wind or when you try to cast. Instead, just let the leader trail straight out in the water as part of the line loop, again as you hold the fly.
Investment Stock As the guide poles the boat, always check the apex of the dragging line loop for any accumulation of floating grass. Grass clinging to the line will surely slow down or even kill a speedy presentation.
Citicorp Investment Services Making the Cast
Fool Guide Investment Motley Two things to remember: As stated before, never try to finesse the cast with the wind howling - overpowering is better. Second, never drop the fly into the water as you start to make the back cast. Hang onto the fly as you snap the trailing line loop from the surface into a back cast. The line's momentum will pull the fly from your fingers. As the line travels back, slip an additional 8 to 10 feet of line through the guides. This extra amount of line will load the rod better and save an extra false cast or two.
Fidelity Investment Services Guides love anglers who have mastered this tactic. Minimize false casting and shoot line and fly to the target within three or four rod strokes. The sooner you can get your fly to the fish, and from farther away, the greater your opportunity.
Investment Management Many times your target suddenly appears within 30 feet or less. Since a quick slap cast is all you'll have time for, it's important to trail as long a line loop in the water as possible. That extra bit of extended line helps load the rod for a better short line delivery.
Mellon Investment Services Cast Corrections: Gun 'n Run
Finance Investment Newbies to saltwater fly fishing have difficulty instantly responding to changing conditions or the need to speedily correct an errant cast. You don't have time to ponder what you're going to do next! If you make an errant cast and still haven't blown the fish, or the fish suddenly changes course, don't wait for the guide to tell you to re-cast. Do it - now!
Investment Manual Science Practice lifting long lengths of fly line off the water, from 40 to 50 feet of floating line, and from 25 to 30 or more feet of sinking line. Make a single back cast, redelivering on the first forecast.
Investment Advisory Services "Gun-and-run" fly fishing - chasing rapidly moving surface-feeding critters or just changing locations fast and frequently - requires the fly angler to be ready to cast the instant the boat is stopped. This means always having your fly line stripped off the reel and ready. Fast running, particularly on windy days, causes problems, like fly line or skinny shooting line being blown into a cat's ball, resulting in an inevitable tangle.
Advice Investment To prevent tangling when you're gunning and running, place a doormat, boat bag or even an ice chest on top of the coiled line to keep it from blowing into a mess. Even better, pick up a new fly-fishing tool called a Fly Line Tamer. It's a clear cylinder, 25 inches tall by 12 inches in diameter with a weighted base, designed to contain your stripped-out fly line and protect it from rushing wind or errant feet. I've tried this unit, and it works like a dream. It also serves as an excellent stripping basket and rod tender - ideal for running and gunning or bait-and-switch billfishing. (For information or to order the Fly Line Tamer call 800-421-2586.)
