Pedestal Networks Earns RUS Acceptance For Its UBS Product Line
ILECs Can Now Cost Effectively Reach U.S. Households that Lack Broadband Access by Using RUS Financing to Purchase Pedestal Networks' Universal Broadband Server
FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 27, 2004-- Pedestal Networks, developer of innovative broadband access solutions, announced today that its Universal Broadband Server(TM) (UBS(TM)) product line has earned acceptance from the Rural Utilities Service (RUS) branch of the United States Department of Agriculture. RUS acceptance makes it easier for Incumbent Local Exchange Carriers (ILECs) to extend broadband services to all of their wireline subscribers, no matter how far they are from a central office (CO), by using RUS financing to purchase and deploy the UBS product line.
"Wireline carriers recognize how important line-powered DSLAMs are to providing ubiquitous subscriber access to broadband services, and RUS acceptance of the UBS is critical to making our solution available to ILECs on a much broader scale," said Corey Geiger, vice president of marketing at Pedestal Networks. "More than a quarter of subscribers in the U.S. are beyond the reach of broadband infrastructure today, and Pedestal Networks' environmentally hardened, line-powered UBS is a new tool for connecting those subscribers to the broadband network. RUS financing makes it even more affordable for ILECs to purchase and deploy the UBS, especially in low-density and remote areas where it has previously been hard to justify the expense of offering broadband service."
Pedestal Networks' UBS is a unique line-powered DSL access multiplexer (DSLAM) designed to eliminate the technical and economic barriers of DSL deployment. The UBS combines patent-pending line-powering technology, automated provisioning, and an environmentally hardened and sealed architecture to enable comprehensive deployment of standard ADSL services in areas previously unreachable by carrier networks -- on long-loop copper pairs and beyond digital loop carriers. The UBS enables carriers to offer access to broadband services without the expense of new right-of-way access, fiber trenching, local power, or environmental conditioning. The UBS is also the first remote DSL solution that can be pre-provisioned, eliminating the need for carrier truck rolls for service turn-up once the system is installed.
